This day celebrates Mary being taken up to heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life. This means she did not go like others. Instead, God brought her directly to heaven. We remember Mary’s unique role in the life of Jesus and the Church honoring her as the mother of Jesus and a model of faith.
Pope Pius XII officially defined the Assumption as a dogma in 1950. This means it is a core belief of the Catholic Church. Even though the Assumption is not directly mentioned in the Bible, it is based on long-standing tradition and reflection within the Church.
